The
villa is within a few minutes walking distance of the old town
centre, with its abundance of restaurants, cafes, shops, boutiques,
markets, sea-front promenade and beach. The extensive beaches
of La Nartelle and Beauvallon are about five minutes drive
in either direction. A regular ferry service makes the short
trip across the Gulf to Saint-Tropez and is a popular excursion. Sainte-Maxime enjoys a favourable year round climate,
with much to offer its visitors by day, by night and throughout
the year. The region is scenic and full of interest - Saint-Tropez,
Port Grimaud, the hilltop villages of Gassin, Grimaud and Ramtuelle
and the beaches of the Bay of Pampelone on the Presque'ile de Saint-Tropez.
The Riviera resorts of Saint Raphael, Cannes, Nice, Antibes, Monte
Carlo and Marseilles are about an hour's drive. All watersports are available. Saint-Maxime has
an 18-hole championship golf course at La Nartelle, a scenic 18-hole
course at Beauvallon, tennis clubs and sailing clubs. In October,
the world famous Voiles de Saint-Tropez 'La Nioulargue" is
staged, attracting a fleet of beautiful classic sailing boats from
around the world. Villa Apollon was originally an annex to the
Grand Hotel and when in 1895 Henri Saudan bought the hotel, he
established it as a favourite with English visitors. In those days
they came to the French Riveira to escape the English winter. However
it was he who installed the first 'Frigidaire' in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez
and opened his hotel in the Summer! Hitherto the season on the
Cote d'Azur had been for the winter only and thus he pioneered
the "unheard of"' Summer Seaon. Villa Apollon was bought
by the present owners, from the daughter of Henri Saudan. In the
1960s Saint-Tropez was popularised by Brigitte Bardot and the area
has been popular summer holiday destination ever since.
