Success for Frances Houghton and Tom Ransley

At the 2010 New Zealand World Championships Frances Houghton returned to international competition and regained her world title in style the GB women's quad. Tom Ransley also had a splendid result in the GB men's eight, winning the silver medal. We wish Frances and Tom well in the run-up to the 2012 Olympics.

Pilgrims Henley Marquee Lunch

The Pilgrims lunch party at Henley was again a popular event. The event was as well co-ordinated as ever and we hope this will continue to be a popular and convivial meeting for Pilgrims and their friends for many years to come. Make a note of the 2011 event on Henely Saturday. The marquee is pitched at Henley Cricket Club, close to the Stewards enclosure.

2008 Olympic Silver medal for Frances in Bejing

Frances Houghton won her second Olympic silver medal in the GB women's quadruple scull on the Sunyi regatta course in Bejing. Her crew also won the World Cup and have been World Champions for the previous three years. Well done Frances!

Tom Ransley's Cambridge four won the Stewards at Henley and Tom also picked up a bronze medal at the world student championships. He represented GB at the European championships.

Valedictory Dinner

A splendid dinner was held in Canterbury in September to mark the retirement of Stephen Graham and Richard Hooper from the boat club. A similar weekend of boat races at Westbere, followed by dinner is planned for Septemeber 2009. Contact Stephen Hermes, Master i/c Rowing at King's.

Edward Beaugie Memorial Award

The Edward Beaugie Memorial Medal is awarded annually to an outstanding sports man or woman at King's Canterbury. The medal was established in 2000, and is awarded to individuals who show outstanding achievement, contribution and leadership to the school and their team. The award is made by a sub-committee of The Canterbury Pilgrims that includes a member of the Beaugie family and heads of sport at King's, who together consider nominations each year, but do not always make an award. This underlines the excellence required to win. In the nine years 2000-2008, eight medals were won, across six sports. The large bronze medals are awarded by the Headmaster at Speech Day. The award is made by the Beaugie family, in memory of Edward, who was Captain of Boats at King's Canterbury and rowed in the 1st VIII in the Princess Elizabeth Cup at Henley. Edward was a member of the Canterbury Pilgrims Boat Club. Click the link for a list of nominees and winners.

Pilgrims Racing

The Canterbury Pilgrims regularly meet at ARA regattas and head races and Masters events. The club has a fleet of its own boats - two doubles and a quad, complete with trailer, sculls and oars. Several individual members have their own sculling boats and King's Canterbury and other clubs have kindly lent us bigger boats from time to time. If you would like to organize an outing or meet at one of these events, please contact Andrew Rudkin, 07973 263245, andrew@canterburypilgrims.com, or Ewan Pearson 020 7831 1000, ewan@canterburypilgrims.com

Support for Rowing at King's

The Pilgrims have made contributions to rowing at King's Canterbury over many years. These have often been in the form of financial assistance towards the cost of the Easter training camp. In recent years the Pilgrims Award has been initiated - a financial award to a promising member of the school boat club.
