Hollowell Scullers Rowing Club welcomes beginners of all ages

Hollowell Scullers has an active junior section, with several who started at 11 or younger and were soon participating in competitions.
They are mainly 13-year olds, but we are keen to add both younger and older beginners.

We have some adult beginners and are hoping to see this group develop. You are never too young (or old!) to learn to row.
Beginners need to be capable of completing British Rowing's standard swim test and capsize drill.

Three of our juniors have been selected for Regional teams and one has won European gold medals for the Great Britain junior team.
The club also has some experienced senior scullers.

Regatta Programme
We are hoping to attend :
Abingdon Head - Sat 15 April
Ball Cup Regatta, Dorney, Windsor - Sun 13 May
Monmouth Regatta - Sat, Sun 26-27 May

Junior membership

The club welcomes children of all ages, who wish to take up the sport.

A frequently asked question is “how old do I have to be before I can start”
The answer to this is that our sport is not age related. You can be as young – or old – as you like. However the one prerequisite is that you are able to swim 4 lengths of a 25 meter swimming pool wearing leggings and a “t” shirt at least 2 of these lengths needs to be on your back “ life-saving style” hands folded across your chest.
Having “passed” the pool session you will be awarded your 1st National Rowing qualification - British Rowing’s Water Safety Certificate.
You are now ready to take to the water in a single sculling boat.

Capsize and Immersion Drill.

We are a small club run by amateur volunteers, with their own children and family commitments.
Although the club has some experienced rowers, it does not have regular qualified professional coaches.
Parents of new juniors are therefore expected to share in the supervision of their own children - including joining the club, taking the RYA safety boat courses provided by Hollowell Sailing Club and learning to drive the safety boats or learning to row with their children.

Competitions

2010 - 1 win at Northampton Head.
2009 - 13 wins at Abingdon, Evesham, Stratford , Warwick, Cambridge, Oxford & Bedford. Eastern Region selection.
Henley Royal Regatt entry in junior quads.
9th place in J15 singles at the National Championships.
2008 - 7 wins at Lea Regatta, Sudbury, Warwick (3), Isis Sculls and Star Small Boats.

Warwick Regatta 2009

Hollowell's most successfulf result to date was obtained with 5 wins; J16 and IM3 singles for Timothy Mitchell, J15 singles for James Rudkin and veteran D singles for Andrew Rudkin, together with veteran C doubles with Ian Evans of Northampton RC. Chris Mitchell of Hollowell and Adam Hughes of Isle of Ely had a very close race, beaten by one foot in J15 doubles against Stratford. Pierre Scrase and Alex Tuck (Northampton RC) also had good performances in their J15 double. Max Marston did well, having to row up an age group in J14 against the National Champion!

Henley Royal Regatta 2009 - the most famous regatta in the World

Hollowell's under-15s took part in the most famous regatta in the world. They were the youngest crew in their event, the junior quadruple sculls. An enjoyable experience, which will set them up to do well at this event in the future. (Pictures taken by Eugenie Scrase, winner of the 'School of Saatchi', young artist competition).
